[Also in Division B8] Apparatus for folding up box blanks, having a central base portion 1 and side walls 2, 4 hinged thereto, one pair of opposite walls 4 including extensions 5 which fold over to enclose extensions 3 of the other pair of walls 2, comprises a plunger 33, a die bounded by guides 8-10 and a mechanism, operated by the return movement of the plunger 33 from the die, to fold the extensions 5. This mechanism consists of, for each end of the box, an axle 11 mounted in the guides 8 and carrying two curved arms 15 and a cam 16 which engages a cam 19 on a second axle 13. The axles 11 are connected by means of a chain 21 and a bellcrank 22, 24 to a roller 25 which rests of the plunger 33. When the plunger descends the roller 25 descends also, thus causing the axles 11 to rotate and hence raise the arms 15 outside the path of the plunger 33. Lugs 17 provided on the axles 13 include supporting members 18 which hold the box within the die. When the plunger 33 is raised the axles 11 rotate in the opposite direction so that the arms 15 fold the extensions 5 inwardly to enclose the extensions 3. The engaging cams 16, 19 then cause the axles 13 to rotate and thus turn the lugs 17 so that the box may be pushed through the bottom of the die as the next blank is being erected. Tabs 7 are forced up from the base 1 of the box by the members 18 to abut the flaps 6 adjoining the extensions 5. |
