A tertiary hydroperoxide is made by reacting a tertiary alcohol with hydrogen peroxide in an orthophosphoric acid medium, at a temperature in the range of 30 DEG to 75 DEG C. the concentration of hydrogen peroxide in the total reaction medium being more than 35% by weight. Orthophosphoric acid normally of 70 to 95% concentration is used, preferably in an amount of 2 to 8 moles per mole of hydroxyl groups in the alcohol. Preferably, aqueous hydrogen peroxide containing at least 50% by weight of the peroxide is used in an amount of at least 2 moles for each mole of hydroxyl groups in the alcohol. Useful tertiary alcohols are t-butyl, and t-amyl alcohol, 2,4,4 - trimethyl - 2 - pentanol, 2,5-dimethyl-2-hexanol, 3,6-dimethyl-3-octanol, 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-dihydroxyhexane, 3,6 - dimethyl - 3,6 - dihydroxyoctane, 1,11-ethylenebis(cyclohexanol), 1-phenyl-2-methyl-2-propanol, 1,4 - dimethyl-1,4-dihydroxycyclohexane, dimethylcyclohexyl-carbinol and 2,7 - dimethyl-2,7-dihydroxyoctane. |
