The system has a fuel cell system (1) and rechargeable traction battery (2) supplying electric power in a combined manner to a propulsion engine (M). A controller (7) is programmed to manage the charge of the traction battery from the fuel cell during normal operation of a vehicle. The traction battery is recharged with available energy in the fuel cell when the power consumed by the engine is less than the power in the fuel cell system. An independent claim is also included for a method of producing electric power for a motor vehicle.
