The invention relates to an apparatus for scrubbing gases, and more particularly smoke, allowing high speeds of the gases without entraining droplets of the scrubbing liquid, by virtue of the parallel flow. It consists of a rotary drum equipped on its inside with obstacles presenting high surface areas for contact between gases and liquids. The horizontal arrangement allows the removal of the gases to the vertical with a single bend. The rotation of the drum ensures trickling (surface liquid flow) down from the top flow inside the drum. The high-speed scrubbing of the gases is only possible with parallel flow. Scrubbers with parallel current necessarily push the gases downwards and therefore involve many bends for conveying the gases. The apparatus according to the present invention therefore avoids this drawback. Because of the surface flow, the water constitutes a sort of cross flow picking up dust. It is therefore particularly intended for purifying the gases generated by urban or industrial waste incinerators.
