APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR UPGRADING CODEC

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for upgrading a codec in which codec information is provided to contents information (e.g., EPG) by upgrading a new codec required in a digital broadcasting environment.

SOLUTION: The apparatus for upgrading the codec includes: a first transceiver that receives a transport stream transmitted from a broadcaster, and transmits a codec requirement message requiring downloading of a predetermined codec to the broadcaster; a first parser that parses a codec packet contained in the transport stream to analyze information contained in the codec packet; and a codec-comparison unit that compares the analyzed new codec information with stored codec information, and determines whether the received codec should be downloaded.
