PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetoresistance effect element and a magnetic head which can secure an output power suppressing Barkhausen noise when the size in the core widthwise direction of the magnetoresistance effect element becomes small. SOLUTION: The magnetoresistance effect element is equipped with a sensor 30 formed by laminating a pinned magnetic layer 20 and a free magnetic layer 24 with a nonmagnetic layer 22 composed of a conductive material served as an intermediate layer, a ferromagnetic layer 26 which makes a bias magnetic field of longitudinal direction act on the free magnetic layer 24, and an electrode 27a, 27b electrically connected to the nonmagnetic layer. The ferromagnetic layer 26 is arranged in the one side of the core widthwise direction of the sensor 30, and in the other side of the core widthwise direction of the sensor 30 a shield layer 28 composed of magnetic material is prepared.
