A method and an apparatus for encrypting an image are provided to achieve real-time encoding, by encrypting only information important to the image so as to reduce the process time for encryption. A method for encrypting an image is performed by setting an encoding algorithm and an encoding operation mode, and partially encrypting image data to be encoded based on the set information. The partial encrypting of the image data is performed by frequency-transforming the image data, determining a portion to be encrypted from the frequency-transformed signal, and encrypting the determined portion based on the set information.
