PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which can more enhance the certainty of substitutional printing processing while complication and cost rise of the apparatus are avoided as much as possible by effectively making use of existing devices. SOLUTION: An MPU 63 of an NIC 5 discerns the presence or absence of a starting abnormality of a main control part 9 which carries out substitutional printing control processing. When the abnormality takes place in the main control part 9, the MPU 63 makes another image forming apparatus carry out printing processing based on a received printing job by transferring the received printing job to a printing server 31 (external device). When a description language processable by an image forming apparatus destined to substitutingly perform printing is the same as a description language of the received printing job, the main control part 9 transfers the printing job to the substitution destination. If the description languages are not the same, the main control part 9 makes an image processing operating part 4 generate bit map image data based on the received printing job, and transmits the bit map image data to the substitution destination.
