PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an E type retaining ring which is mounted to a shaft member by an easy operation without skill and a tool used for this. SOLUTION: The E type retaining ring and the tool used for this are described as follows: (A) In a hollow shaft member vertical to a shaft core direction in a side view, a top hole at an upper end and a bottom hole at a lower end of which diameter is shorter than that of the top hole are provided and a line connecting centers of the top hole and the bottom hole runs through the shaft core. (B) An inserting leg at a center part, holding arms curved and provided at right and left of upper ends of the inserting leg and a small projection protruding at the upper end of the center part of the holding arms are provided for the shaft member. (C) In the inserting leg, an upper end part width can be fit to the top hole, a part lower than the upper end part is tapered, a part immediately above the lower end is slightly larger than an inner diameter of the bottom hole and a lower end part is formed in a stepped form of which width is shorter than the bottom hole. (D) The shaft member is supported as being held by the arms and engaged with the bottom holes by the lower end part and the part immediately above the lower end of the inserting leg.
