PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for driving a liquid crystal device, the method facilitating image writing in an extremely short time in a liquid crystal device which uses changes in a state of a liquid crystal layer comprising a cholesteric liquid crystal, and to provide a driving device for a liquid crystal device. SOLUTION: The method for driving a liquid crystal device and the driving device for a liquid crystal device include the following steps to record an image in a liquid crystal device 1 having a liquid crystal layer 7 comprising a cholesteric liquid crystal held between electrodes 5, 6. The steps are: [A] an initialization step of applying a voltage V1 equal to or higher than a threshold of phase change in the liquid crystal layer 7 into a homeotropic state; [B] a selection step of selecting a voltage from two kinds of voltages, high and low (V2H and V2L), equal to or higher than the voltage V1 depending on a portion of the liquid crystal; and [C] a retention step of applying a voltage V3 between the electrodes 5, 6 under such conditions of the value and application time of voltage that change the portion where the high voltage V2H is selected into a planar state and the portion where the low voltage V2L is selected into a focal conic state.
