The method comprises the following steps: a) detecting a collision by means of a sensor system; (b) if the detected collision is a head-on collision or if the vehicle has rolled over, then b1) reducing the relative height of the end of the seat part nearest the back part with respect to the opposite end of the seat part and b2) rotating the back part with respect to the seat part, bringing said parts closer together; c) if the detected collision is a rear impact, then c1) causing the back part to increase the angle formed with the seat part such that the two parts tend to align with one another and c2) causing the entire seat to describe a general rearward movement.
