A method for automatically setting a protocol of a monitoring camera is provided to detect header information of a command received from a DVR when a system of the monitoring camera is booted or is connected to the DVR again after communication with the DVR is stopped, and set the protocol of the monitoring camera automatically to be suitable for the DVR. When a protocol for communication with a DVR is set up in a monitoring camera, a microcomputer detects header information of a command received from the DVR(S10-S12). The microcomputer automatically selects and sets a certain protocol corresponding to the DVR according to the detected header information(S13).
