METHOD FOR ASSESSING GRAFT VIABILITY IN ABDOMINAL-ANAL RESECTION OF RECTUM IN CANCER PATIENTS

A method for assessing the graft viability in abdominal-anal resection of rectum in cancer patients comprises the mobilization of the sigmoid colon, the dissection of the sigmoid arteries sparing the marginal blood vessel, the removal of the mesentery and the fat appendages in the distal graft segment. Upon the major step of the surgery and the exteriorization of the graft to the skin of the perianal area, one of the plates of the probe is inserted into the graft lumen while another plate is installed on the part of the serous membrane. Pulse-oxymetry data are recorded and blood flow in measured in the periphery of the graft at least in four points. The graft is regarded as the viable one when the difference between the partial oxygen pressure in the peripheral blood and the capillary blood of the graft does not exceed 10-15%. The pulsation recorded in the intramural blood vessels of the graft should correspond to the heart rate.
