PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a copolymer comprising a sulfonic acid or a functional group which is a salt thereof in an optional amount and to provide a method for producing the copolymer. SOLUTION: The copolymer comprises at least one kind of olefin unit selected from the group consisting of an ethylene unit and a 3-20Cα-olefin unit, and a unit of at least one kind of compound represented by formula (1) (wherein, m represents a number of 0 or 1; R<SP>1</SP>represents a 1-18C aliphatic hydrocarbon group; and X represents a monovalent cationic species).
