A washing machine and a method for controlling the same are provided to maximize space utilization and to save energy by using a strut as a supplementary washing unit and cleaning a small amount of laundry without operating a main washing unit. A washing machine(100) comprises a drum, a body(110), a supplementary body(120), and an air supply unit. The drum is installed in the body. The supplementary body is installed at one part of the body, where the volume and the height of the supplementary body are less than those of the body. The air supply unit installed in the body supplies air into the drum and the supplementary body, and includes a blower fan(60) and a heater(90). |
