PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten focus detection time, and to surely make a focus fixing position cover the depth of field even to sudden temperature variation. SOLUTION: Temperature on the inside and temperature on the outside of the lens barrel of a photographic lens are detected, set information on the reference driving range of a lens driving means in accordance with the detected temperature on the inside is stored, and correction information on the reference driving range of the lens driving means in accordance with a temperature difference between the detected temperature on the inside and that on the outside is stored. Then, the reference driving range of the lens driving means in accordance with the detected temperature is acquired, the difference of the detected temperature is obtained, and the correction information on the reference driving range of the lens driving means in accordance with the difference is acquired to correct the reference driving range based on the correction information. The driving range of the lens driving means is set, and also an autofocus searching direction is set in accordance with the sign of the difference, whereby the lens driving means is driven in the set autofocus searching direction within the set driving range.
