PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a medium handling apparatus that reduces the possibility of miscounting without using a mechanism for offsetting ends of media. SOLUTION: Stacked certificates 10 each have a counting mark 11 at an end. The counting mark 11 is optically different in color from a body part 10a of the certificate 10. An optical sensor 16 radiates light to the stacked certificates 10 to count the certificates 10 according to an output 33b from the reception of reflected light from the counting mark 11 of the certificate 10 and an output 33c from the reception of reflected light from the base part 10a of the certificate 10.
