A method for operating a glow plug in a diesel engine is provided to allow a glow plug control unit to execute an open control loop by setting a target value specified relative to the temperature of a heater in an engine control unit. A method for operating a glow plug in a diesel engine, in which an engine control unit(6) and a glow plug control unit(1) interact with each other, comprises the steps of determining a target temperature of a heater. The determination value is transmitted to the glow plug control unit through an engine control unit. The glow plug control unit uses an algorithm stored in the glow plug control unit or processes a specific value stored in the glow plug control unit such that the glow plug unit operates to execute the target value.
