An apparatus and a method for signal discrimination in a broadband wireless access system are provided to regenerate preambles having low PAPR(Peak to Average Power Ratio) irrespective of the number of preambles, so that assignment of preambles using orthogonality is possible in a base station, relay station and a subscriber station. In a receiving apparatus for signal discrimination in a broadband wireless access system, the receiver comprises the followings. A first preamble correlator(403) performs synchronization by detecting a preamble received from a base station. A second preamble correlator(405) performs synchronization by detecting a preamble received from a relay station. The apparatus further comprises a sequence reference(407) for providing a preamble sequence for preamble detection to the first and second preamble correlators.
