Larger particles are separated-out from a mass of particles conveyed on an endless belt 12 by combing it repeatedly lengthwise of the conveyer using combs or screens, the larger particles being fed to a shoot 18. The endless belt 12, Figs. 1 and 11, carries the material to be separated over a table 14 while rows of combs 70 secured on an endless belt 118 are driven around rollers 38 by a motor 134 and given a vibratory motion transversely to the direction of flow by a motor 110 having an eccentric spindle 114. Particles incapable of passing through the combs are diverted by obliquely positioning the combs on horizontally-adjustable supporting brackets 90 disposed on each side of a supporting framework 24 ; the combs may also be adjusted vertically by adjusting the rollers 38 on rods 84. Fig. 12 shows an arrangement of several combing means for successively separating material. The rollers are supported in end plates 34, 36 reciprocated by push-rods 78, 80 which pass through linear motion ball bearings 96 disposed in guide plates 86 and connected with a cross piece 120 in which the eccentric 114 acts. The teeth of each comb may be secured by adhesive between a pair of plates which are bolted together and secured into channels 52 which in turn are secured to the belt 118 by screws 60, projections 54 being provided on the channels for co-operating with guides 66. In Fig. 14, the combing arrangement is carried by a slide 160 and vibrated by a motor 110 and spindle 112. In another arrangement, the combs are vibrated by attaching the projections 54 to the moving part of a solenoid which is continuously supplied with A.C. current. The belt 12 carrying the material may also be vibrated ; alternatively, a vibratory feeder may be used instead of a belt. In a further arrangement, the combs are carried by chains instead of a belt. The teeth may be made of nickel chrome alloy wires and arranged to vibrate only when in contact with the material and just afterwards when selfcleaning of the teeth can be effected; each tooth may have a taper to its front and rear edges, a wavy profile or lateral spurs.</p> |
