An emergency stop device (3) for an elevator, having a vertically traveling body (1), a guide rail (2) vertically placed in a hoistway and guiding vertical movement of the vertically traveling body (1), a pressing member facing the guide rail (2) and having formed on it a pressing surface (7b) whose upper side is tilted toward the guide rail (2), and a braking wedge member (8) in sliding contact with the pressing surface (7b) of the pressing member and pressed, when an emergency stop is activated, in between the guide rail and the pressing surface of the pressing member to brake lowering of the vertically traveling body (1). The pressing member (8) has a movable pressing member (7a) and a cam (12). The movable pressing member (7a) has the pressing surface (7b) and is provided displaceable in the left-right direction. The cam (12) is placed between the movable pressing member (7a) and a fixation section (5) located on the opposite side of the movable pressing member (7a) from the guide rail. In normal operation, the cam (12) holds the movable pressing member (7a) such that the braking wedge member (8) and the guide rail (2) are separated from each other, and in emergency stop operation, the cam (12) rotates to horizontally move the movable pressing member (7a) to the guide rail (2) side, pressing the braking wedge member (8) to the guide rail (2).
