Preparation of a modified diene rubber polymer (I) comprises polymerization of a conjugated diene monomer or a combination of conjugated diene monomer with a aromatic vinyl monomer in a hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of a alkaline metal catalyst to form an active polymer carrying an alkaline metal at the extremities and reaction of active polymer with a silicon compound (1). - Preparation of a modified diene rubber polymer comprises polymerization of a conjugated diene monomer or a combination of conjugated diene monomer with a aromatic vinyl monomer in a hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of an alkaline metal catalyst to form an active polymer carrying an alkaline metal to the extremities and reaction of active polymer carrying an alkaline metal at the ends with a silicon compound of formula R2O-Si(OR1)(OR3)-(CH2)n-N(R4)(R5) (1). - R1-R3 = 1-4C alkyl; - R4, R5 = 1-6C alkyl; and - n = 0-10. - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is also included for rubber composition comprising (I) (10-100 parts in weight) (a), other rubber (0-90 parts in weight) (b), carbon black (0-100 parts in weight) (c), silica (5-100 parts in weight) (d) and silane coupling agent (0-20 wt.%) (e) (where the total of (a) and (b) is 100 parts in weight and the quantity of (e) is based on the quantity of (d)).
