PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel polyether poly(mono)ol and a production method thereof. SOLUTION: In this production method, in the presence of at least one cationic polymerization catalyst selected from specific aluminum or boron compounds, a≥3C alkylene oxide is ring-opening polymerized with an initiator having one or more hydroxy group per one molecule thereof and having a hydroxyl equivalent of 1,200 or more, wherein using conditions: (a) the water content of the initiator is 5 to 100 ppm during mixing with a cationic polymerization catalyst; (b) the amount of the cationic polymerization catalyst is 10 to 120 ppm, based on the amount weight of the initiator; and (c) the water content of the≥3C alkylene oxide is 3 to 100 ppm, the obtained polyether polyol or polyether monool is made to have a ratio of a primary hydroxyl group to the all terminal hydroxyl groups of 45 to 85% and to have a ratio, of a peak area ascribed to a multimer by-product to the total area of all peaks, as measured by a gel permeation chromatography, of≤30%.
