PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a server authenticate a user of a product so that a product ID code is not easily peeped. SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus 10 reads an optically readable pattern expressed in authenticated paper 17 by its scanner 103, decodes the product ID code, a product name, a type and an authentication page address to store them in its table 102 in response to instruction input from its operation panel 104, transmits the product ID code stored in the table 102 to the server 15 in response to a request from a client 11, when the server 15 decides that the product ID code is regular and a user ID code corresponding to the product ID code is not yet registered in a table 152 of the server 15, the server 15 generates a user ID code corresponding to the product ID code, registers the user ID code in the table 152 and the server 15 transmits the user ID code to the image forming apparatus 10.
