PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means for performing AF of a phase difference detection system based on a result obtained by detecting a face, and also selecting an optimum focus detection area according to the detected state of the face in every photographed scene. SOLUTION: The camera is equipped with a face detection part, a focus detection part, an area designation part and a control part. The face detection part detects a face area in a photographic image plane. The focus detection part has a plurality of candidate areas in the photographic image plane. Then, the focus detection part acquires the deviation of a pair of images based on luminous flux passing through a photographic lens in the respective candidate areas. The area designation part designates a focus detection area out of the candidate area corresponding to the face area. The area designation part changes a method for designating a focus detection area in accordance with the size of the face area.
