A liquid crystal display device is provided to reduce a color shift. The liquid crystal display device is illuminated with light that has a wavelength dispersion characteristic of a light distribution that is broader as the wavelength of light becomes shorter in a horizontal direction and that has less wavelength dependency in a vertical direction, so that the wavelength dispersion characteristic of a transmittance in a liquid crystal panel in the horizontal direction is canceled and the occurrence of a color shift in the vertical direction is avoided. Thus, a liquid crystal display device with a negligible color shift in the vertical, horizontal, slant, and all directions can be realized.
