PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress generation of excessive stresses in an endless transmission belt when a motor is rotated in a forward direction after a tensioner is subjected to the tension applying action when the motor is rotated in a reverse direction. SOLUTION: An engine comprises a motor which is also used for a generator, driven by a crank shaft in a forward direction to generate the power, and capable of driving the crank shaft in the forward direction, and a hydraulic tensioner T for adjusting the tension of a belt for transmitting the power between the crank shaft and the motor. The tensioner T comprises a cylinder 25 and a piston 26 which are relatively moved to each other during the tension mitigating action and during the tension applying action, and an orifice 27 for limiting the flow rate of a working fluid circulating in a leak passage 33 in order to enable the tension mitigating action according to the tension of the belt immediately after completion of the tension applying action when the motor is rotated in a reverse direction.
