PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a 4-alkoxypyridine-1-oxide derivative used as an intermediate for producing benzimidazole derivatives useful as gastric inhibitory agents and antiulcer agents in excellent workability and in excellent operability in a state free from the risk of explosion. SOLUTION: This method for producing the 4-alkoxypyridine-1-oxide derivative represented by formula (I) (Ra and Rc are each H or the like; W is a single bond or the like; Rb is a 1 to 6C alkyl or the like) is characterized by comprising a process for reacting a pyridine-N-oxide derivative with a compound of HO-W-Rb in the presence of potassium hydroxide in toluene.
