PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recorder having an ink cartridge with a built-in waste ink pad which enables ink in the ink cartridge to be always used up before a waste liquid accumulation amount in the waste ink pad reaches its limit one. SOLUTION: The minimum valueαof waste liquid amount of flushing required for recording by each ink remaining amount is calculated (Step S1). A waste liquid amountβof maintenance expected to be performed in a head cleaning control. An "expected amount of the total liquid" where the flushing waste liquid amountαand the maintenance waste liquidβare added together, is set as a threshold (Step S2). It is determined whether the threshold exceeds a free space of waste ink pad of the ink cartridge (Step S3), and a head cleaning control is executed (Step S4) when the threshold does not exceed the free space (No in Step S3), while the head cleaning control is prohibited (Step S5) when the threshold exceeds the free space.
