PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a four-cycle engine for an outboard motor capable of obtaining the desired engine output by preventing corotation of a lubricating oil with respect to a crank shaft by allowing the lubricating oil to smoothly flow into an oil pan from a crank case. SOLUTION: The four-cycle engine 11 for the outboard motor 5 comprises a crank case 18 for supporting a crank shaft 20 with its axis extending in the longitudinal direction, and an oil pan 48 arranged below the crank case 18. There are provided a crank case oil return passage 55 for returning a lubricating oil 46 into the oil pan 48 from an inner bottom part of a crank case 17, and a cam case oil return passage 56 for returning the lubricating oil 46 to the oil pan 48 from an inner bottom part of a cam case 38. A gas passage 59 for communicating the crank case 17, the cam case 38 and the oil pan 48 with each other is formed separately from the crank case oil return passage 55 and the cam case oil return passage 56.
