PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an OCB mode liquid crystal display device in which reverse transition is prevented and gray scale reversal of an image display is prevented. SOLUTION: A common voltage signal VCOM in a black insertion period a is made larger than a common voltage signal VCOM in an image writing period b. In the black insertion period a. the common voltage signal VCOM=VmH or VmL. In the image writing period b and an image retaining period c (c1, c2) other than the period a, the common voltage signal VCOM=VcH or VcL. The polarity of the common voltage signal VCOM is reversed for every frame. During the black insertion period a, a backlight 18 is turned off. Consequently, the contrast is not decreased even when transmittance of an OCB mode liquid crystal display panel is increased by application of a black insertion voltage. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
