A radial seal for the piston of a rotary-piston I.C. engine of the kind comprising a threesided piston planetary revolvable in an enclosing body 9 having a biarcuate, trochoidal inner profile 8, comprises a pair of sealing strips 4, 5 located one behind the other in the direction of piston rotation 10 in a piston groove 3 extending parallel to the piston axis. The strips bear tightly against the inner profile, and the leading strip 4 includes grooves 11 through which lubricant can pass to a gap 12 so that the outer radial faces of both strips are lubricated. Any lubricant wiped off the profile 8 by the strip 4 passes through a gap 13 to the bottom of the groove 3 and is then guided by one or more grooves 14 to a longitudinally extending groove 16 closed at its ends to lubricate the adjacent side faces of the strips 4, 5 and so permit relative sliding movement between the strips to promote gentler and more balanced movements of the strip relative to the enclosing body 9 to reduce wear. Lubricant in the gap 12 is shielded from the flame and thus carbonisation of the lubricant is reduced. Two or more strips 4 may be fitted one behind the other and in front of strip 5. |
