An automated sawing apparatus comprises a saw head 14 which is movable in order to perform a cutting stroke and is rotatable to perform angled miter cuts and a lumber feed conveyor system for feeding lumber to the saw head 14. The lumber feed conveyor system includes a conveyor 16 for moving short pieces of lumber along a path that is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the lumber. This short lumber conveyor 16 comprises a pair of jaws 72, one of which floats in a direction perpendicular to the short lumber conveyor path against the bias of a spring (90, fig 5). One of the jaws (80, fig. 5) has a serrated face with sham protrusions and the other (78, fig. 5) has rounded protrusions. The conveyor may also be used with other forms of cutter such as a laser or high pressure water. |
