A patterned light extraction sheet and a method for making the same are provided to prevent a breakdown of an electron structure of a light emitting layer by improving a patterning process. An encapsulant block comprising an encapsulant material is provided. A patterned encapsulant region having an external patterned encapsulant surface is formed on a surface of the encapsulant block. The process for forming the patterned encapsulant region includes a process for forming a first recess set having at least one first recess(112-1), a process for filling the first recess with a first recess filler, and a process for forming optionally a second recess set comprising at least one second recess, and a process for filling the second recess with a second recess filler. At least one of the first recess set and the second recess set has a pattern. The pattern is selected from a random pattern, a periodic pattern, and a combination of the random pattern and the periodic pattern. The pattern has a feature size of at least 5 nanometers to 5,000 microns in at least one lateral dimension. The periodic pattern has a period of at least 10 nanometers to 5,000 microns in at least one lateral dimension. The first recess has a maximum recess depth of at least 25 nanometers to 10,000 microns. The second recess has a maximum recess depth of at least 25 nanometers to 10,000 microns. At least one of the first recess and the second recess has a recess opening coincident with the exterior patterned encapsulant surface. The first recess filler differs in a refractive index from at least one of the second recess filler and the encapsulant material by at least 0.001 to 3.0. |
