A fluid-pressure system comprises a fluidcooled retarder brake adapted to be actuated in direct response to pressure fluid metered thereto from a pressure fluid source, service brakes and a control valve having an inlet connected to the source and an outlet connected to the service brakes. The control valve is subjected to the pressure fluid metered to the retarder brake and is responsive only above a predetermined fluid pressure actuating the retarder brake for developing a fluid pressure in the service brakes. As described a first valve meters fluid from a compressor and a reservoir to the retarding brakes, e.g. fluid-cooled disc brakes. The control valve 11 acts to supply fluid from the reservoir to service brakes and has a control port 47 connected to the outlet side of the first valve and inlet and outlet ports 34, 35, connected respectively to the reservoir and the service brake actuating cylinders. When the metered fluid pressure from the first valve acting on the diaphragm 23 exceeds the combined upward force of atmospheric pressure acting on the diaphragm 26 and the compressive force of the spring 48 the valve stem 42 moves downwardly to close the vent bore 41 and open the valve 38 to allow fluid to pass from the reservoir to the service brakes. A valve is provided in the system which may be moved so that the two sets of brakes are simultaneously energized in response to actuation of the first valve, the control valve being vented to atmosphere.
