Adaptive illumination device

A pair of lighting units are connected together by a hinge and a gear mechanism (fig 3) so that angular movement of one lighting unit causes equivalent movement of the other in the opposite direction. The resulting dual beam pattern has a less intense central beam and distributes the light to the outer limits of a scene (fig 9b). The lighting units pivot away from each other for wide angle operation and toward each other for telephoto operation. Each lighting unit may comprise a housing and a matrix of light emitters on a front surface, such as LEDs that emit visible or infra-red light. The gear mechanism can be linked to a servo motor so that the light units move under electronic control, which can be linked with the zoom control of a camera lens. The illuminator may be used with CCTV cameras and may include an indicator of the selected beam pattern comprising cogs and an arrow (fig 4) or a key (fig 5) to aid setting up.
