The device (10) has a hollow cylinder (12) formed of sub-shells (11, 11a), which form a cavity (24). The sub-shells are foldably connected with each other at a longitudinal side connected with one another. Locking pins (16) are provided with locking lips (15) at another longitudinal side. The locking pins are brought in effective connection with the locking lips. A paint application tool e.g. paint application roller, with a color roll handle is inserted into the sub-shells. Each sub-shell has rims, which are formed as grooves and slots.
