An apparatus and a method for controlling safety in a microwave oven are provided to inform a user of a fan motor relay trouble by outputting a signal sound or a voice through an audio outputting unit or a message through a message display unit. An apparatus for controlling safety in a microwave oven includes a fan motor operation detecting unit(110) and a control unit(120). The fan motor operation detecting unit detects the operation of a fan motor(140) for cooling a magnetron(130). The control unit determines whether a fan motor relay(150) is out of order by receiving a detection signal from the fan motor operation detecting unit, and stops the operation of the magnetron only in case that the fan motor relay is out of order. The fan motor operation detecting unit includes a voltage comparator(112) which compares the voltages applied to both ends of the fan motor, and a switch(114) which outputs an on or off signal according to the comparison result of the voltage comparator. |
