Copolymers (I) used as gas hydrate inhibitors comprise 40-99.5 wt.% ethylenically unsaturated lactam(s) A, 0.5-60 wt.% monomer B with a water solubility less than 10 parts weight monomer in 100 parts weight water (at 21degreesC) and 0-50 wt.% other monomer C. An Independent claim is also included for solutions of (I) with a K value of 10-45 in 5 wt.% ethanol solution at 21 degreesC in solvents with a flash point greater than 50 degreesC.
