The system (10) has a data processing device (1) designed to produce main driving side data on basis of data of a positioning mechanism (3) and a data base device (2). The main driving side data contains the information about a prevailing left-hand traffic or right traffic at a current position of a motor vehicle. The data processing mechanism produces position data, which characterizes the position of the motor vehicle relative to an oncoming traffic lane on the basis of the main driving side data and the data of the positioning mechanism. An independent claim is also included for a method of warning a driver when driving on roadway reserved for oncoming traffic.
