PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain an electrochromic device, capable of displaying images over a wide range of effective pixel area, by making element composition having hysterisis in voltage-optical characteristics, thereby performing passive drive arranged in an XY matrix form. SOLUTION: An electrochromic element 10 is provided, where a pair of electrode structures 11 and 12 forming at least transparent electrodes 2 and 7 on support substrates 1 and 6 are arranged to sandwich an electrolyte layer 5 so that they face each other, a porous electrode 4 adsorbing an electrochromic pigment, formed on at least one of the pair of the transparent electrodes 2 and 7 constituting a pair of the electrode structures, and an NiO thin film 13, and further desirably, a metal oxide n-type semiconductor thin film 14 is formed between the transparent electrode 2 and the porous electrode 4.
