PURPOSE:To obtain a carboxylic acid or its ester under mild conditions in high yield by the reacion of an alcohol or an ether with CO in the presence of Ni, iodine and an organic nitrogen compound, in the presence of a specific amount of a spefific iodide. CONSTITUTION:An alcohol or an ether are allowed to react with CO in the presence of Ni, iodine, and a trivalent organic nitrogen compound to give the corresponding carboxylic acid or its ester, wherein the iodine is selected from the compounds of formula RXn (R=H, alkyl, alkylene; X=I, Br, provided that at least one is I; n=1-3), I2, I3, formula RCIO (R=alkyl) or formula MI2 (M=alkaline earth metal) and non-reactive with the above Ni or N compound, e.g. methyl iodide. The iodine compound is used in an amount of >=0.2 mol times (as I element) the amount of the N and Ni compounds. EFFECT:Can be made to react under mild conditions without using an expensive pt-group catalyst, e,g. Rh. |
