PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for monitoring a processing target gripping device capable of improving safety. SOLUTION: The processing target gripping device 21 has: a gripping force detecting device 2; a notification device 3 for notifying the operator of gripping fault; a storage portion 6 for storing a threshold value of the gripping force; a computation potion 5; and a control potion 4 for operating the notification device 3 by comparing the detected value of the gripping force from the gripping force detecting device 2 to the threshold value stored in the storage portion 6 by the computation portion 5 when it is determined if the gripping force of the processing target W by a claw 27 of the processing target gripping device 21 is abnormal or not and it is determined that the gripping force is abnormal.
