PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detection device for an elevator capable of certainly and easily detecting entanglement of ropes and cables of the elevator and restoring the elevator to usual operation at an early stage after end of an earthquake. SOLUTION: The detection device for the elevator is provided with: a projector 8 provided on an elevator shaft fixed body and emitting a light toward a normal position of the ropes or the like arranged in an elevator shaft 1; a light receiver 9 provided on the shaft fixed body, arranged so as to be opposed to the projector 8 while clamping the ropes or the like and receiving the light emitted from the projector 8; a rocking sensor for sensing rocking of a building provided with the elevator; and a projector control means for emitting the light from the projector 8 when rocking is sensed by the rocking sensor. Thereby, when the light is emitted from the projector 8, when the light emitted from the projector 8 is received by the light receiver 9, it is determined as abnormality that the ropes or the like are not arranged at the normal position.
