PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new recombinant enzyme preparation having alcohol and/or aldehyde dehydrogenase activity.

SOLUTION: A gene encoding a specific alcohol and/or aldehyde dehydrogenase of gluconobacter is cloned. The invention provides an alcohol and/or aldehyde dehydrogenase preparation composed of a chimeric recombinant enzyme composed of a combination of polypeptides identified by a specific sequence of the gene and a polypeptide obtained by the addition, insertion, deletion and/or substitution of one or more amino acid residues. The invention further provides a method for producing L-ascorbic acid by treating L-sorbose and/or D-sorbitol with the enzyme preparation and converting the obtained 2-keto-L-gulonic acid to L-ascorbic acid.
