<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate luminance irregularity by further equalizing surface luminance of a backlight device. <P>SOLUTION: Since the temperature distribution in this backlight device 1 is not uniform, the width for arranging a cold-cathode fluorescent lamp 3 in a part where the luminance is lowered depending on a temperature characteristic of the cold-cathode fluorescent lamp 3 is reduced as compared with that of a part where the luminance of the cold-cathode fluorescent lamp 3 is not lowered. Therefore, the backlight device 1 further uniform in luminance distribution can be provided. In a part where the luminance is lowered, a cold-cathode fluorescent lamp further low in gas pressure is arranged.
