PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sensing element which is markedly superior in visibility, can carry out a gradual display in easy to understand manner, and is made up in a compact form being best suited to home applications and is superior in cost benefit, and to provide a sensing method therefor. SOLUTION: The sensing element has a structure, comprising a sensitive section whose color, is changed along with a progressing reaction; and a colorimetric section comprising of parts representing a first color tone of the sensitive section, before its color is changed, a second color tone after being changed into the display upper limit color, and at least one or more color tones on the way of the change in color between the first and second color tones. The colorimetric section is disposed next to the sensitive section, and its parts are arranged in the order, starting from the first color tone before the color is changed, to the second color tone, after being changed into the display upper limit color.
