PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a piston ring with an ion-plating coat, superior in hardness, wear resistance and cracking resistance and free from chipping or separation in severe sliding environment. SOLUTION: The piston ring comprises the laminated coat formed on the outer peripheral sliding face by using an ion plating method for alternately laminating a compound layer (TiCN) consisting of Ti, carbon and nitrogen, and a compound layer (CrCN) consisting of Cr, carbon and nitrogen. More preferably, the carbon concentration of the laminated coat is 4-8 wt.%, and the laminated coat is such that the compound layers each having a thickness of 3-9 nm are alternately laminated.
