PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic coating apparatus preventing leakage or the like of a coating during a filling work by accurately pressing only a cartridge becoming an object filled with the coating by a simple constitution, and its method. SOLUTION: A cartridge exchange apparatus 6 is provided with a support part 66 provided movably between a coating apparatus 4 and a coating filling apparatus 5 and a pair of grasping arms 67, 68 mounted to the support part 66 and capable of grasping the cartridge 3. One grasping arm 67 is mounted through a spring member 70 such that the cartridge 3 can be pressed in a filling direction of the coating when the coating is filled in the empty cartridge 3 by the coating filling apparatus 5. The other grasping arm 68 is displaceably mounted to the support part 66 in a direction not obstructing pressing of the cartridge 3 by one grasping arm 67 when the cartridge 3 is pressed by one grasping arm 67 through a support rod 71.
