PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine starter which takes an advantageous scavenging form in restarting, even in a relatively short engine stopping operation period. SOLUTION: The engine starter has a stopping-restarting control means for automatically restarting an engine by performing combustion, when a restarting condition is realized, by automatically stopping the engine, when an automatic stopping condition of the engine is realized, and also has: an electromagnetic valve train; and a valve timing control means for selectively setting any of an ordinary 4-cycle mode 4S of taking a 4-stroke form of intake/compression/expansion/exhaust and a specific cycle mode 2S of taking a 2-stroke form of alternately repeating intake/exhaust, as its operation mode. The valve timing control means switches the electromagnetic valve train to the specific cycle mode 2S in a predetermined period t2 to t3 on and after the fuel supply stopping timing t2, and returns the valve train to the 4-cycle mode 4S in the predetermined timing t3 just before stopping the engine, in engine automatic stopping control.
